Grandpa was his best friend. There was never a dull moment with him around. The games they played were unique. Grandpa came up with games instantly based on the mood, the weather and the materials available around .
During summer, they always played in the backyard. The outdoor games left grandpa tired and out of breath. But he never complained .
During fall, the leaves around made a good ambiance for a treasure hunt. Magically, by the end of every day , the yard would be cleared of all the fallen leaves as part of the games.
They spent the rainy season in the barn making paper boats and playing around with the rain gauge . The interesting ritual was that he and grandpa would get to drink as much of their favorite drink as the amount of rain that day.
Winter was time for great indoor games. The favorites being hide and seek and the game where they named each item they found . The name had to be symbolic of a characteristic of that item. They had named each and every cutlery, artifact and furniture in the house. Even grandma was not spared.
Grandma found it very difficult to stop her husband and her grandson from bringing the house down. Though she portrayed a grumpy face on the outside , she thoroughly enjoyed the chaos at home . She in fact cherished the days of laughter and joy because she knew deep within that those days were numbered .
Grandma knew that grandpa was growing older but she was more concerned about her grandson getting too big for these games. He would soon stop finding these games amusing. She had seen grandpa take this role with his children and grandchildren. He never got bored of it but sadly the other person did.
And then, on rainy days, he would insist that she went to the barn with him to make paper boats and measure amount of rain.

This reminds me of the song, “Puff the Magic Dragon.” Remember that? It is so sad as children age and leave us behind….
Yes Ann. I am listening to that song as i am typing this message. 🙂
