Granny’s Last Mango Season

February Story Series

It Rained Stories

Granny loved mangoes. She could eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. She would dig into it sitting in her favorite corner of the house. This granny was very old. No one , including her, knew her exact age. She has been around for a very long time and has seen many mango orchards grow and bloom. People in the village called her the “Very-old-Granny”.

It was almost the end of the mango season that year. Granny eagerly waited for her grandson “Little” to come back from school with mangoes. It was his job to get mangoes for her. “Little” would go to all the mango orchards in the village looking for the best mangoes. He never came home empty handed.

“God bless you my child! This could be granny’s last mango season” is what granny told “Little” every day when he got her mangoes. This was “Little’s” last year at school in the village and he was happy that he could get mangoes for granny every single day of this mango season. “Little” would join his brothers for high school in the town next year.

Little did “Little” know, that, granny had tricked his elder brothers (“ Not-So-Little” and “Little-Long-Ago”), when they were of his age. All of them religiously got mangoes for granny every day of the mango season because granny told them this could be her last.

As Granny washed the mangoes and saved them for her dinner, she grinned and looked at “Little”s younger brother, “Tiny-Little” . “Tiny-Little” would start school next year. Granny told herself , “ It is Tiny-Little’s turn next. I have many more mango seasons ahead of me and “Tiny-Little” is just ready for that.”

That sneaky old woman. But maybe for yet another feed of mangoes, I’d do it too.
