The School Of Motherhood.

Disclaimer: Motherhood can also be read as parenthood. Since I am a mom, the term motherhood resonates better with me and hence the usage of the term motherhood.
I am enrolled into The School Of Motherhood. This is a strange place to be in because every mom wants to be the best mom for her child. Every mom wants her child to be proud of the person that she is. Every mom wants her child to feel happy and safe with her.
Motherhood involves a lot of work!
I have been a mom for long enough to relearn some of the forgotten lessons of my life:
I relived my childhood while playing those little games with you.
I rediscovered my strengths while teaching you to get up when you fell.
I restored my faith in goodness while telling you the stories of valor and virtue.
I relearnt to pray for others while praying for your friends whom you love so dearly.
I rebuilt my hopes for a better world for tomorrow because you will live in that world.
I rearranged the priorities of my life to focus on myself because I realized that I cannot be a better mom without being a better person.
I have been a mom for long enough to understand that my action will speak more  than my words.
I took on more responsibilities to show you that there is nothing that can stop you when you set your mind on doing something.
I involved you in what I was doing to tell you that work can be fun too.
I shared my dreams with you to let you know the power of having dreams.
I  owned up to my mistake and said sorry because I felt empowered in the whole process and I want you to see that.
I shared with you my vulnerability to show you that courage is the power to overcome those fears and not the absence of fear itself.
I talked to you about my broken dreams to tell you that broken dreams don’t equate to a broken person.
I have been a mom for long enough and I am still learning some of the best lessons of my life.
I am learning not to compare myself with anyone else because I don’t want you to do that.
I am learning  to keep working on myself because I don’t want you to stop growing at any age.
I am learning to stand beside you and sometimes behind you to let you take your decisions.
I am learning to listen without judging every time you talk to me about your goals and ambitions.
I am learning to feel a sense of accomplished each day because I want to transfer that feeling to you each time I kiss you good night.
Motherhood is a lot of work. A lot of work on oneself because it is only your actions that your child will follow. Not your words.
I enrolled into this school of motherhood exactly fourteen years ago and I couldn’t think of a better way to wish my child a happy birthday than by thanking her for all the wonderful things that I am learning in this journey of motherhood.

Isn’t it marvelous that our children learn as much from us as we learn from them? I enrolled in the school of motherhood over 36 years ago and am now relearning with my grandsons and it’s fabulous to relearn all those charmingly childish things. The journey continues….

Aww this was so beautiful Deepa… Loved every word..
And you are a mother, not a college goer.. Err… Shocking 🤯

Lovely post. To a child, having a mother who is loving and approachable and unconditionally supportive, is a priceless treasure.

Wonderful post, Deepa. My sons are 22 and 19 and although many of these things are no longer applicable for moms with adult children, many still are. Have a great weekend!

Thank you. Yes, every stage of motherhood is different yet so similar. Mine are 14 and 9 now and though it is very different from when they were 6 and 1, I am still working hard (the shift being working on them to working to myself) 🙂

Happy birthday to your daughter! I loved this post, because it is so true (and eloquent). Being a good parent does make us a better person, and teaches us that we are far stronger and more caring that we ever imagined. And that is a very good thing!

The lessons that we learn as mothers are beyond amazing! I’ve learned so much from both of my kids.

So beautiful! I can’t wait to watch my daughter grow and learn as well as learn from her. I’m so happy you have such a good relationship with your daughter. God bless
