Run Baby Run

February Story Series:

It Rained Stories

Granny’s Last Mango Season

Dear God

Running was his second nature. He ran as a kid, he ran as a teen and he ran as an adult. He could run in rain, shine, wind and even fire. Nothing could stop him from running. Today, as he ran towards setting a new world record, he couldn’t stop his tears. His feet, his tears and the rain, kept each other company.

As a kid, he ran towards his parents. He was given a treat each time he ran towards them. Later when his father abandoned him and his mother, he ran between them. He tried his best to bring them back together. He couldn’t.

While in school, he ran away from his bullies. They could never catch up with him.

The run he remembered the most was the one when he carried his mother in his arms and ran  away from the wildfire. He could still hear the sound of his mother’s shrill voice telling him, “Run baby run”. That night, he ran with all his might. He had to make sure he took his mother to the nearby town to treat her burns. That day he ran away from a wretched past into a hopeful future.

She survived, and so did his hopes of making a living, running. He invested all his time and energy training to run.

His mom was in the stadium when he entered it for the last lap. He saw her radiant face which cheered him with so much pride. She looked great after her recent skin grafting surgery to take away the burn marks on her face. Amidst all the applause and the sound of the rain, he could still hear her voice telling him, “Run Baby… Run!” That day he ran towards a new world record in marathon running.
