A new bike, a new neighborhood and a new school. As if that wasn’t challenging enough, it was drizzling on the way back home from school. He knew it was going to be a tricky journey. The one on the new bike and otherwise.
As he sped up on the pavement, he suddenly skid and banged his cycle on the taillight of a car that was parked near the curb. He looked up to his mother who was right behind him. She came running to pick him up. He said he was fine, and that he just had a small bruise on his hand. Once he stood up , they checked the bike. The handle was slightly bent, but everything else looked okay.
Suddenly, both of them gasped. The tail light was broken and small pieces of glass were scattered on the ground. They looked around. It was a quiet afternoon with no one around. They had a moment to decide their next step. Both of them wanted to run away from that place without looking back. But then, mom looked at him and said “Though an accident, we have to own it up now…”
Holding each other’s hands, they rang the doorbell of the house near the car. As mom spoke to the owner promising him to take care of the expenses of fixing the light, the boy stood there, soaking in the rain and learning an important life lesson.
Owning up one’s mistakes takes a lot more courage than running away from a situation. As both of them walked away from the accident site, they were a little lower on their bank balance but scoring high on their uprightness.
