I bought a shelf to keep all my prized possessions
I placed the shelf in the center of my house
I soon filled up the racks of the shelf
With things that held special place in my heart

My favorite books got the best corners
Pictures of trips and celebrations were next
Goodies collected over the years followed
Some motivational quotes to inspire the future

The vase, the painting and the lamp
All of it came together like magic
I decided to leave some racks empty
To balance the load and to keep it pretty.

Looking at the empty space from a distance
My mind started playing its games
It reminded me of the places I did not go
And the memories I did not make.

I diverted the mind, but it made me think
Of all the places that I should go
It kept going back and forth
Making me wonder if the shelf itself was a mistake.

I went to the garden and got some flowers
Placed them in all the empty racks
It’s beauty brought me back to the present
Filled me with the fragrance of its being .

Amongst the memories of the past
And the dreams of the future
The existence of those flowers
Remind me to enjoy my present.
