Encountering Demons

Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide

This is my favorite song when I want to acknowledge the dark side within. This song connects because it acknowledges the vulnerability of the person. A person who is  possessed by the demons within. He reaches out for help to get out and sees hope in the light of someone’s eyes.

Your eyes, they shine so bright
I want to save their light
I can’t escape this now
Unless you show me how

We are all scared of these demons. Actually, not so much of the demons that are described as (as per the wiki)  a group of supernatural and often malevolent beings prevalent historically in religion, occultism, literature, fiction, mythology, and folklore; as well as in media such as comics, video games, movies and television series. But, more so, of the demons in the form of greed, hatred, jealousy, anger, laziness etc etc.

It is strange that we try to hide these demons from others when the truth is that it affects no one else as much as it affects the self. Each time  these demons take charge, it leaves us weaker, powerless and tormented. It might look like we have caused harm and damage to another person, but we are all wise enough to understand that it has only depleted us.

I remember a talk by a spiritual teacher where she said, when we see a person in rage, charging at another person and causing him harm, sympathise with the person in rage. He is the one who loses more in the whole event of things.

It is easy to identify those moments when the creepy crawly demon takes charge of us. We think differently, we act differently and with those frowns and the tension built up in our body, we even look different. When this happens, we are on autopilot mode. It is hence important to acknowledge this feeling, accept our vulnerability, not judge ourselves for letting the feeling take over  and to choose to not harm ourselves in the whole process.

The reasons for the presence of these demons could be complex. The antidote to all these demons is supposed to be :  compassion. Compassion to self, which, in turn can project itself as compassion to others. Compassion leads to not judging ourselves for letting these demons take charge at a primary level. Compassion at a higher level can help us to even stop identifying these qualities as demons within.

It is easy to play martyr to these emotions. Our victory is when we accept, love and nurture ourselves despite the plethora of emotions that traverse us. Distracting oneself and indulging in a completely different activity helps in an immediate snapping out of that feeling. Today, when that feeling possessed me, I decided to write this blog post and I am over it temporarily.

That light in the eyes which can save us is nothing but the light of compassion.
