The musk deer family differs from other deer by possessing something of particular economic importance to humans—a musk gland. Musk deer live mainly in forested and alpine scrub habitats in the mountains of southern Asia, notably the Himalayas. Musk deer have been hunted for their scent glands, which are commonly used in perfumes. The glands can fetch up to $45,000/kg on the black market. (Source: Wikipedia)

A musk deer, gets captivated by its own scent and searches everywhere for its source. He puts his snout into thorny and dangerous bushes trying to trace the source of the scent. In the process, injuring itself. The poor deer does not realize the smell is generated by its own musk gland.

The example of the musk deer is used while talking about self enlightenment.

A 15th-century Indian mystic poet and saint, in one of his verses compared the plight of us, human beings to that of a musk deer. He said

Musk lies in the musk deer’s own nave,

But roam in the forest he does – it to seek;

Alike, God pervades heart to heart,

But men of the world this don’t conceive.

As I think more about the life of that musk deer, the more compelled I feel to uncover, identify and activate that musk gland which can unleash such fragrance.

Imagine the life of that deer… it smells such a wonderful aroma wherever it goes. The trees, the plants, the water, the other animals he meets, all of them would smell so good. Even a decomposing dead animal also would seem like a peacefully degenerating mass of body to him.

Such Bliss!

There is no better example for the universal truth that any bliss that is experienced outside is a mere reflection of the abundant bliss that lays within.
