Hitting the Unpause button
Today I hit the unpause button on my blogging journey. One of my favorite spiritual teachers said “ It is easy to be tranquil and peaceful in the Himalayas. The actual test is when you step into the plains, get into a crowded bus, and get stepped on your foot by someone wearing a stiletto. “ That was precisely my experience in the past year. I stepped out of my comfort space, my peaceful Himalayas, and got into a crowded bus on the plains. And boy! Did I get stepped on my foot by people wearing stilettos? Did I have to re-visit subjects that I thought I had understood? Did I have to unlearn and relearn a whole lot of things? Yes, yes, and yes to all three questions. I am really excited to be documenting and sharing my learnings over the past year.
To give a quick update, I started working a year ago after a long career break. The entire journey of finding a job, preparing for the interviews, cracking the interview, and then finally getting a job was no less than a roller coaster ride. And then, meeting the expectations of the job, building a rapport with people at work, contributing and growing at work, and dealing with the imposter syndrome, all of this was such a learning and rewarding experience. I experienced The Fascinating and Magical Journey Of Starting Something New all over again. 🙂 I hit the unpause button on my career after a very long time, and am sure I will write ample about it in the upcoming posts.
I was recently listening to a podcast by Cognitive Scientist Dr. Maya Shankar. Maya was a Senior Advisor in the Obama White House, where she founded and served as Chair of the White House Behavioral Science Team. In her podcast- A Slight Change of Plans, she talks about how at the beginning of a new chapter in your life, you are more motivated to make a change. Research shows that moments when you leave college, shift identities, take on a new role or become a parent, feel like a chapter break in your life, and those are the times when you are likely to make changes. But we cannot depend only on those significant shifts to make some important changes. That is why we feel motivated to do it when we turn that last leaf in a calendar. New year’s resolutions, as we call them. I really liked the reasoning there. I hope this new year, you are motivated to hit the unpause button. Especially on activities that you have always wanted to do.
Maya’s podcast was named the Best Show of the Year 2021 by Apple. If the subject of behavioral science intrigues you, I recommend this podcast to you. Maya talks to real-life inspirations, celebrities who had to overcome and then thrived in the face of a big change. Sharing the Spotify and Apple links to her podcast here for my lovely readers.
Today, as I hit the unpause button on my blogging journey, I realize how much I have missed it. Do share your experience of hitting the unpause button and how that made you feel. Feel free to share it in the comments section or on my Facebook page. You can do it on any other media that you are connected with me. I look forward to hearing from you. I look forward to engaging in a conversation with you.
