Straight Out Of My Fitness Journal : Part 1: Work In Progress
What I Am:
I am a regular, ordinary person trying to stay fit and healthy.
I love my workout routine and look forward to it.
I have tried and tested many fitness and diet regimes and have realized that not everything works for everyone.
I am a work in progress.
What I Am Not:
I am not a fitness expert.
I don’t have a degree to be prescribing a certain workout regime.
I do not have that perfect Hour glass figure that most of us aspire to have.
I do not starve myself.
This blog consists of some of my observations over the last couple of decades, trying to say fit and healthy. This is just a conglomeration of ideas and concepts that have worked for me.
In the two decades of my fitness journey:
- I have attended structured fitness classes, taken gym memberships (trying my hands on those beastly machines) and walked miles hoping to shed some fat enroute.
- I have had times of strict workout routines and those of long intervals of absolutely no time for any routine.
- I have followed some very strict diet regimes and then undone all the good of that regime by eating everything that I could lay my hands on.
- I have had my high points when I felt so good about the way I looked and my low points when I would have nightmares about standing on that weighing scale.
Does all of that sound familiar? Well, that’s exactly why I said I am a regular, ordinary, work in progress.
Each one of us who is on a fitness journey will have our story to say. And, this is mine.
Moderation: Basic Requirement With Any Exercise And Diet Regime.
Like most of you, I still read every article with a hashtag healthy living, fitness, weight loss, fitness journey etc. Whenever I come across something interesting, I try to bring it into my daily routine. But then, if it isn’t in tune with my true self, it just falls apart and doesn’t stand the test of time.
I have had short intervals of being a vegan, that of a no-carb diet, a soup and salad diet etc. I have also tried very long intervals of workouts, short but rigorous workouts and even a no-workout-only-diet pattern.
After all those experiments, I have come to the conclusion that the only sustainable pattern is that of moderation. Anything that is short term goal based and extreme, completely burns me out and starts showing adverse effects after a period of time.
Moderation ensures longevity and that is definitely what each of us is looking for.
Moderation in how long we exercise and how much we exercise. I still remember that friend who trained for a half marathon every day without proper rest and curing He ended up causing a permanent knee damage.
Moderation also in what we eat and how much we eat. Most of us have gone on those extreme diets which make us feel so deprived and unhappy.
Moderation ( being realistic) even in the goals that we set for ourselves. One friend was never happy about her weight loss because her benchmark was a size zero figure. No amount of convincing made her rejoice in the way she looked.
Positivity: The Only Mantra That Works.
It is very easy to get put off by the absence of results when we set out on a fitness journey. Every now and then, I curse my body structure, the hormones and my genes when I don’t like my reflection in the mirror. This leads to such a negative state of being that I end up getting out of shape. One feeds on the other.
On the contrary, when I like what I see, I feel so positive and that in turn forms a cycle of ideal weight and positivity. Again, one feeding on the other.
These cycles will keep coming, one after the other.
The only way forward is:
- By continuously working out and nourishing one’s body ( in moderation)
- By telling oneself that we are all a work-in-progress.
I have only turned a couple of pages of my fitness journal. More in upcoming posts.
There is no better way to start the fitness journey than to get on your feet and there is no better day to start your fitness journey than today.
I still remember those who shared her fitness journey with me and inspired me to embark on mine. Share your fitness journey with people around you. You never know! You might inspire someone to embark on a journey that could change their life.
Like all of you, I am a work-in-progress and I am happy to be one.
