The Fascinating and Magical Journey Of Starting Something New

The Fascinating and Magical Journey Of Starting Something New

There is something fascinating and magical about starting something new. Isn’t it! Part nervousness and part excitement. Then, there are a zillion things to be figured out. There is a lot of time and energy to be devoted to that special new thing in your life. The new thing can be a new job, a new relationship, a new business venture, welcoming a new baby, moving to a new place, starting a new school year, I could go on and on. The butterflies that you feel in your stomach, the sweating of the palm or feet, or that sudden feeling of dryness in your mouth, can be similar under each of these circumstances. But, when you have set your mind on something, like one of my favorite hosts and content creators, Marie Forleo says, – Everything Is Figuroutable.
As a side note, I would like to add that Everything Is Figuroutable is one of my book recommendations for you if you are looking for one. It is an awesome book.

The Context

I recently launched a podcast. This is the link to the first episode of my podcast- Deep As Thoughts. So here I am, figuring out how to launch a podcast, how to add background music, how to read and record my text for it, and finally how to broadcast it. I am just one episode old in this vast world of podcasting and I have all the symptoms of the Starting-Something-New Syndrome that I was talking about earlier.

So how do we get past all of the fears and anxieties and do what we want to do anyway? This is the topic I would like to discuss here. As I write this and read it out, It is like an affirmation to myself. It is like telling myself to go ahead despite those creepy negative thoughts that keep trying to pull me back, trying to tell me to stop and to quit.

Here are some techniques that I use constantly. Nothing that I invented. They are points that were spoken about and written by many wise people. I just use them to help me.

  1. If you are capable of thinking of an idea,  you are capable of executing it as well

Not all of us get the same ideas, right! So if a particular idea has occurred to you, then that is because you have been laying the foundation for that idea inside you. Some consciously and some through life experiences. A lot of hard work has already been done and now it is about continuing those efforts and taking them to the next level and executing them. For example, if you have an idea of making a product better, then that is because you have used the “not so good” product and subconsciously you have been thinking about making it better. I am not saying all our random ideas are executable. Some of them definitely are and you intrinsically know what they are. So always remember, if you are capable of thinking of an idea, you are capable of executing it as well.

  2. Every activity is always a work in progress

We can never wait to start when everything is perfect. That day might never come. So when we understand that whatever we start is going to be a work in progress, we get the courage to start it anyway. I don’t intend to say it is okay to serve a half-cooked pie. But when you have a pie to be sold, don’t stop selling it because you have not found the right silverware to serve it in. The silverware can be changed from time to time and you can keep hunting for it even while you are selling the pie. So, understand that every activity is always a work in progress.

  3. The worst-case scenario would be – Hey you tried!

After college and a year of working for a company, I was bitten by the entrepreneurial bug. With a friend, I set out to start a company. We had so much fun setting it up, signing our first client, and oh that first check that we received from our client was priceless! After a while, we closed shop and went back to regular jobs. I applied for a certain role at an organization and was hired for something better. While welcoming me, my CEO told, “ I am hiring you because you are a failed entrepreneur. You had it in you to start something new”. That statement was etched in my mind forever. It is all about having the conviction to start it and give it your best shot. So don’t forget that the worst-case scenario would be – Hey You Tried!

  4. A new project is simply the sum total of the smaller tasks it can be broken down into.

It is possible that some of these smaller tasks are not even new to us. When a friend recently took up a new business order (much bigger than the ones that she had done so far), she had those butterflies. But when she broke the project down into smaller tasks she realized that there were only a handful of tasks that were actually new. So she is spending most of her time and energy figuring out how to do those few new tasks. The sum total of those few new tasks and few already familiar tasks is a completely new Project. Say that out to yourself – loud and clear!

In Conclusion

These are some simple conversations that I have with myself. These Self Pep Talks help me streamline my thoughts and keep me motivated to try out new things. Like I mentioned earlier, the new thing could be starting a podcast, starting a new event in your neighborhood or for your community, starting a new project, or moving to a new country. Doesn’t matter where you are and what you are trying to do, the journey can be magical!

What are your thoughts on this topic? Do you consider the process of starting something new fascinating and Magical? What is the self pep talk that you give yourself when you are starting something new?

I can’t wait to hear your thoughts.
