What Do You Call Yourself
What do you call yourself during a pep talk to self?
I call myself Deeps (that is what my friends call me), sweetheart, sweetie, dear, etc when I give myself a pep talk. I like to look into the mirror when I talk to myself. But most of the time , I am either walking or running when I do this. So I am not actually looking at myself, but imaging myself standing right in front of me, when I talk the “big talk”.
During times when I am not happy with myself for either not doing the right things or saying the appropriate things , or for being lazy for a long interval of time, (we spoke about laziness in my previous blog post) I do address myself by some other “!#&$@” words. It helps to bring out the right spirit in order to make a transition from inaction to action.
I listen to motivational talks and read motivational quotes during the day. The talks could be delivered by coaches and experts or by spiritual leaders. Their words also inspire me to get into an action mode.
I often wonder if they are actually saying something new, something that has never been said before, or serving us the same old wine in a brand new bottle. For most part of it, the later holds true. But still, it sounds like music to our ears and we get inspired by it. What else would explain the availability of thousands of best selling books, belonging to this category, in the market. There are thousands more being written, and who knows, you and me may have a motivational best seller book in the market sometime soon to our credit.
Each of those authors have come up with a best practice that works for them. A lot of them are tried and tested methodologies to inculcate better habits, to stay focused, to keep oneself motivated, to get more things done, to become a better individual etc. The readers use these techniques to get the desired results.
All of us readers have tried different methods to become that person mentioned in those books. Now, the most important aspect here is what each of us readers tell ourselves while trying these techniques. That pep talk to oneself is what makes the difference. And, that pep talk varies from person to person depending on so many factors. And, that my dear friend, is what makes each person’s story unique. That in turn paves the way for another best selling motivational book.
So, no matter how much we read or listen to, unless we have the right pep talk ready for ourselves, we will not benefit from it. The entire difference is made by that pep talk.
We already have continuous conversation going on within us. Converting that into a pep talk is like using the already shining sun’s energy and converting it into electricity. 🙂

I don’t address myself by name. But, I always do self-talk, especially when I am depressed or angry.
Well said, Deepa! All too often, our internal dialogues are negative rather than pep talks. We need to encourage ourselves instead!
So true Ann. We waste all our energy in negative thoughts and then feel drained too.
